The spectrum of allergic ocular diseases

ObjectiveThe purpose of this article is to review the pathophysiologic mechanisms, differential diagnosis, evaluation, and treatment various manifestations ocular allergy, with an especial focus on immunoglobulin E (IgE)-mediated disease.Data SourcesA PubMed search was performed include articles, using terms allergy allergic conjunctivitis.Study SelectionsRecent relevant human studies in English language pertaining our topic study were selected. Animal pathophysiology also reviewed. We focused clinical trials, practice guidelines, reviews, systematic reviews. In addition, case reports reviewed if they described rare presentations, disease or novel therapies.ResultsOcular encompasses both IgE- non–IgE-mediated disease, severity may range from mild sight-threatening inflammation. A comprehensive regimen including education, lifestyle measures, topical therapies, even systemic interventions be necessary for effective management allergies, tailored according symptom severity.ConclusionOcular frequently encountered by allergists eye-care specialists, despite progressively increasing incidence, it often remains underdiagnosed and, hence, untreated.
